Should Israel exist? [Reader reply]
In the days following the Hamas attack in Israel last year, while zero-context video clips were being mashed together showing seemingly random exchanges of gunfire and some dude flying a paraglider, extraordinary claims were being made about the scope and meaning of the incident. So I did what I normally do and asked a controversial question:
Understandably, it got a handful of comments, including one from a reader who said:
Why try to lie Hamas away. They are terrorists and Israel has as much right to peaceful life as any other people
To this I replied: Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure what it has to do with my post.
Unfortunately the original commenter never responded, but somebody else offered their own take on the matter:
My guess is that [original commenter] has come to the conclusion that you do not believe Israel has a right to exist in the land God originally gave it, and that - if you *did* believe Israel had a right to do so, your article would be worded differently (at least in places).
Can I respectfully ask what your position is on Israel in this regard?
Given what I said in my article, I still don’t see the connection at all. Asking for clarification and evidence supporting a very strange narrative that is generating global headlines has nothing to do with “lying Hamas away” or the “right to exist”. But I have no problem discussing this topic, apropos of nothing.
